Acne Scars: Prevention and Treatment

Posted by Rebecca Yong on

Whether you live with acne or no longer have acne, but are still affected by acne scars, the related emotional impact can sometimes be quite challenging.

Cosmetic and chemical acne scar treatments can sometimes be harsh on the skin and expensive.

Here we explore both cosmetic treatments and natural acne scar treatments and preventions that work with the skin’s natural healing powers for the kind of radiant skin that delivers confidence.

What are acne scars?

Acne scars are caused when an inflamed lesion or acne papule or blemish becomes so engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria that it causes a break in the skin or follicle wall.

Not all acne causes scars because if the blemish is close to the skin’s surface the damage is usually minor and your skin can heal it quickly.

However deeper lesions damage and destroy healthy skin tissue. The types of acne scars vary:

  • Hypertrophic or Keloid Acne Scars - occurs when the body produces too much collagen and creates a lump or raised tissue.
  • Atrophic, Depressed or Ice Pick Scars - occurs when the body fails to produce enough collagen and there is a loss of tissue.
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation - sometimes confused with pimple scars this is a temporary discolouration of the skin that will eventually fade.

Cosmetic Acne Scar Treatment

In the search for how to get rid of acne scars, many people choose cosmetic treatments. These include:

  • Dermabrasion - removal of the top layer of skin using a laser or a wire brush. Can leave the skin looking red and sore for several months.
  • Laser Treatment - lasers are used to either remove a small patch of skin around the scar or stimulate growth of new collagen for smoother looking skin.
  • Punch Treatment - removal of scars surgically, sometimes including the plugging or grafting of a scar.
  • Subcision - removal of the upper layer of skin, allowing blood to help form connective tissue.

Some of these treatments can leave patients feeling discomfort and not able to (or willing to) go out in public for weeks or months.
