7 Tips to Prevent Exercise Acne

Posted by Judy Cheung-Wood on

We all know that exercise does wonders for our lungs, heart and overall health but many people share a common concern associated with physical fitness – exercise breakouts. Exercise helps to flush toxins out of our body, pumps oxygen around our bodies and reduces stress levels which are all beneficial to reduce the development of acne. Whist exercise does not contribute to acne, by participating in physical activity we expose our skin to warmth, moisture and potential acne-causing bacteria. But don’t let this hold you back from exercising! Follow these 7 handy tips when exercising to help you maintain healthy, glowing skin all year round! 1) Cleanse Always remember to cleanse areas which sweat immediately following a workout, such as the face, back, neck and chest. Use lukewarm water along with a gentle, natural cleanser after participating in physical activity to ensure sweat does not mix with oil or dirt and clog your pores. Clogged pores are the main source of blemishes and breakouts! Always shower after a workout, too! 2) Use Sun Protection When exercising outside, remember to apply a generous layer of sunscreen on areas which are exposed to the sun. It protects our skin from damaging rays and heat-related breakouts. 3) Appropriate Attire Dress in loose fitted clothing made from moisture-wicking fabric, rather than exercising in tight clothing that sticks to your skin. This will help to draw moisture away from your skin and prevent sweat from settling and clogging your pores. Not to mention how uncomfortable inappropriate gym clothing can be! 4) Wipe out Germs Before using gym equipment, make sure to give it a good wipe to prevent germs and bacteria from spreading, especially areas which will come to contact with your skin. 5) Bring a Towel Rather than using the back of your hand to wipe away sweat, use a towel to wipe away excess sweat. It’s more effective, keeps germs away from your skin and decreases skin irritation. Sweat sitting on the skin attracts dirt – which is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and breakouts! 6) Exfoliate Washing skin frequently to remove sweat can lead to dry, flaky skin. Exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells which can clog pores. Regular gentle exfoliation will help you to discover smooth, healthy looking and feeling skin! 7) Don’t Quit Regular exercise increases blood flow and clears toxins from the body. This helps to nourish skin cells and works to prevent acne development in the long run. Much like our muscles, our skin will also become accustomed to your exercise routine and thrive from it!
