Christmas is here – Is it a struggle to resist the food?

Posted by on

Can't stop thinking of eating that box of chocolates you got for Christmas? Or finishing the Christmas pudding, Panettone, custard, ice cream…the list Christmas food list is endless! It's helpful for us to work out if our cravings are pestering us because of stress (lot’s of it around at Christmas) or boredom. Or, are they actually our body’s way of telling us we may be deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral? Who hasn't had that craving around 3pm? Anything lying around the office, sweets, chocolate, crisps, cake - Watch out! At Christmas it’s even harder – there’s always something to eat and drink and usually, we’ve been drinking the night before which doesn’t help our blood sugar levels. Just the minerals to regulate blood sugar levels and work their magic on our energy levels are Chromium and Magnesium. Here's why:

Chromium - What does it do?

Balances blood sugar levels Reduces cravings by normalising your hunger

What can happen if you are deficient?

Irritability or dizziness if you haven't eaten for a few hours Addiction to sweet foods Need for frequent meals Cold Hands Addicted to sleep or having drowsiness through the day SML

What foods are high in Chromium?

Eggs, Apples, Chicken, Potatoes, Parsnips, Green Peppers, Butter A high intake of refined, sugary foods actually robs our body of Chromium, as do processed foods and additives.

Magnesium - What does it do?

Essential for the production of energy Helps with PMS Helps relaxation of muscles Strengthens bones and teeth.

What can happen if you're deficient?

Muscle twitches (ever had a twitchy eye?) Constipation Confusion Depression

What foods are high in Magnesium?

Almonds, Cashews, Cooked beans (fresh - no Heinz), Garlic, Green peas, Potato skin, Spinach Do any of these deficiency signs sound familiar? Try some 100% nut butter on slices of apple for a snack or turkey & parsnip left over’s from Christmas lunch. You might just find you get the energy without the slump and start to make lasting changes to sugar addictions.
