Acne Myths Busted!

8 Acne Myths, Busted (or Confirmed) by the Evidence

Short answer: Dairy, sugar, stress, coming off the pill and pre-period chin breakouts: all real. Wheat, red foods, oily hair, and the "top half diet, bottom half hormones" face rule: mostly myths. Every acne trigger that holds up works through the same two levers, oil production and inflammation, which is why treating those directly beats chasing individual foods.

Acne folklore is mostly wrong, but not entirely, and the useful bit is knowing which is which. Eight beliefs, one verdict each.

Belief Verdict Why
1. Wheat causes acne Mostly false Wholegrains don't. Refined wheat (white bread, cereal) is high-GI and spikes insulin, which raises oil. It's the refining, not the wheat. Coeliac disease is real but isn't an acne cause. More
2. Dairy causes acne True, for many Milk carries growth factors and raises insulin and IGF-1 more than its sugar content predicts; observational studies repeatedly link it to acne, skim milk most. Whey protein is the concentrated version. A four-week dairy-free trial tells you if you're one of them
3. Coming off the pill causes acne True Combined pills suppress androgens. Stop, and androgen activity rebounds, often with a few months of jawline breakouts before hormones settle. Manageable, and worth planning for. Post-pill acne guide
4. Red foods cause acne False Capsicum, tomato, beetroot and berries are antioxidant-rich and good for skin. Some synthetic red dyes in old cosmetics rated as comedogenic in early tests; modern non-comedogenic makeup has moved on
5. Oily hair or a fringe causes acne Half true Hair oil itself isn't the main issue; hair products (wax, gel, dry shampoo, conditioner) migrating onto the forehead are. A product-free fringe pinned back at night is fine
6. Chin breakouts before your period are hormonal True Androgen activity rises relative to oestrogen in the week before a period, and the lower face has the most androgen-sensitive oil glands. Jaw and chin spots that arrive on schedule are hormonal
7. Above the "midline" is diet, below is hormones False Too neat. Hormones drive oil everywhere; diet pushes hormones. The lower face is more hormone-sensitive, but a sugar-heavy week shows up on the forehead too. Real face map
8. Stress and alcohol cause pimples True (stress), indirectly (alcohol) Oil-producing cells have receptors for stress hormones; stress measurably raises oil and inflammation. Alcohol works through sugar, wrecked sleep and dehydration rather than directly. Skip the sugary cocktails

What the true ones have in common

Every confirmed trigger, dairy, sugar, stress, hormones, does the same two things: raises oil production or raises inflammation. That's the whole game. Cut the triggers you can (sugar, dairy trial, sleep), and treat the two levers directly rather than auditing every food you eat.

Oil is the one topical products can't reach. Our Extra Strength Acne Control Vitamins use high-dose Vitamin B5 to support healthy oil balance from within, with Vitamin B3 for inflammation and the barrier; early clinical evidence, not a cure, and the one part of the routine that works on the cause every myth above is circling.

FAQs

Does dairy really cause acne?
For many people, yes. Milk raises insulin and IGF-1 and repeated studies link it to acne. Trial four weeks without it.

Does sugar cause acne?
Yes. High-GI foods spike insulin, which raises androgens and oil. Low-glycaemic diets reduced lesions in controlled trials.

Does stress cause acne?
Yes. Sebum-producing cells respond to stress hormones with more oil and inflammation; breakouts typically follow two to four days after a stressful stretch.

Why do I break out on my chin before my period?
Pre-period hormone shifts raise androgen activity, and the chin and jaw have the most androgen-sensitive oil glands.

Does coming off the pill cause acne?
Often, for a few months, as androgens rebound after being suppressed. It's temporary and treatable.
