Does Summer = Worse Acne for You?

Posted by on

Now we all suffer from acne breakouts time to time, but why does acne tend to get worse around summer time? For those who suffer from acne prone skin, summer isn’t such a great time of the year, because the heat and humidity can cause your skin to increase oil production, which means more oil is available to clog your pores thus often leading to more breakouts. This is not to say that you can’t still stay clear during summer, here are some tips on how to prevent and treat those unwelcoming bumps.

Does Summer Cause Acne?

Now you’re probably thinking does summer cause acne? Well yes and no. Some people notice that the sunshine actually improves the quality of their skin. And some people who suffer from acne prone skin, find that their acne has the potential to get worse as the weather gets warmer. This is because when oil from your skin mixes with bacteria from the surface of the skin, the surrounding environment, in this case, the heat and humidity, produces more oil, causing your pores to clog up and thus pimples to form. Remember more oil equals a higher chance of spots forming. But not to worry, like I said before there are few things you can do to fight acne over the summer.

Cleanse Daily

Incorporate a cleanser that contains 0.5 to 1% of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is an excellent way to help balance off the excess oil that tends to strike during these warmer months. Avoid harsh cleansers that will strip away your skin's moisture and of natural oils. I recommend SkinB5’S Acne Control Cleansing Mousse, as it is very gentle on the skin and contains ingredients like Vitamin B5, Green tea, Salicylic acid and Aloe Vera. All these powerful ingredients combined, help to balance and reduce sebum production, reduce bacteria growth and inflammation and lastly remove any excess oil from your skin thus helping you unclog your pores. Lastly be sure to moisturize every time you wash your face, opt for a light nongreasy moisturizer that leaves no shiny residue on your skin.

Eating & Drinking For Better Skin

What goes in your body can affect your skin! Some foods can trigger breakouts by irritating the sebum production. Avoid fatty foods, processed foods and refined sugar. Instead, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, these foods not only work wonders for your overall health, but they are also vital sources of antioxidants, vitamins and other essential nutrients that help heal acne prone skin. Make sure you drink lots of water throughout the day. Remember water flushes out toxins and other impurities from your system and keeps your skin cleansed and hydrated. Use Oil Free Makeup If you wear makeup during the summer, make sure it is oil-free and that it is mineral or water based. Mineral makeup is great for acne prone skin as they contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which helps absorb the skin oils as well as protect the skin from sun exposure. Also, it is a good idea to keep your makeup brushes clean on a daily basis, so be sure to cleanse and rinse away any bacteria that might be clinging on to the bristles which can result in breakouts. Use SPF! I know what you’re thinking, sunscreens are heavy and super greasy and it will break you are more. Well if you get the wrong type, yes, but if you choose wisely it will, in fact, keep your skin well protected from the sun and will help keep acne lesions away. The key is to look for a lightweight, broad spectrum SPF that’s non-comedogenic and oil-free so it won’t clog pores. And if it has additional antioxidants to protect and nourish skin that’s even better! So there you have it! I hope these tips helped and remember don’t let acne ruin a wonderful summer. The only way to prevent breakouts is with daily care and caution. Practicing these tips will ensure beautiful and glowing skin all year.
