A – Z of foods that benefit the skin; Grapes

Posted by on

‘G’ is for GRAPES Did you know that Grapes are actually a type of berry? Some Grapes are grown specifically for wine winemaking for producing raisins and then we have the grapes we see in the fruit shops, markets and supermarkets that we eat. Table grapes (as they can also be known) are an excellent source of dietary fibre, which is one of the reasons they benefit the skin. As you know dietary fibre is essential to ensure efficient passage out of the bowels. Think of it this way, if it comes out of the bowels, it doesn’t come out on the skin! Grapes are also high in phytonutrients, the most well known being Resveratrol for it being found in red wine. However, Resveratrol is also able to help with the reduction of an enzyme that breaks down collagen. As you know reduction of collagen goes hand in hand with skin aging. So Resveratrol in Grapes helping to protect collagen is good news for all of us as we age. Most of the Phytonutrients in grapes are found in the skin and seeds. So having Grapes as a snack is perfect for increasing your Phytonutrient levels. Just remember to rinse your grapes (or buy organic if possible) as they are ranked high in pesticide contamination. Maybe 2 minutes longer to prepare than grapes straight up, is the fruit salad below.
